Christian Chitty was
a Nineteenth Century descendant of Udayappa Chetti of Kodalaru
(Cuddalore) in the Nayakdom of Gingee on the Coromandel Coast of India.
Operating from Koddiyar in Trincomalee, Udayappa engaged in commerce with the
Seventeenth Century Kingdom of Kandy on a Royal Charter from King Rajasinghe II
(1608-1687). Unlike Udayappa, Captain John Knox (father of Robert Knox)
displeased King Rajasinghe II by breaching protocol. Anchoring The Anne in
Koddiyar Bay in early February 1660, Knox Snr. did not gain royal permission to
enter the King’s Domain. He and his son ended up captives of the King, as
recorded in An Historical Relation of the Island of Ceylon.
Udayappa’s origins are discussed in The
Milieu of the 17th Century Coromandel Coast and Chetty Migrants to Dutch Zeylan.
Hisson Francesco Chetty settled
in Dutch Ceylon in the border town of
Batticaloa. The last Will of Francesco was drawn by Peter Wambeek, a Dutch
Merchant, on 17th May 1759.
Christian Chitty was a descendant of
Francesco’s daughter Falestina who married Kanthappa Chetty. His branch of the
descendants of Francesco lived in Colombo.
By the mid-nineteenth century, the concept
of Ceylonese was emerging in a growing Colombo, the capital of
what had been British Ceylon for over half a century. The uncertainties of
the period of regime change from Dutch to British had receded into the past.
The legal profession was beginning to develop. The Supreme Court was
established in 1801 & Law College in 1874. Both edifices stood on
Hulftsdorp Road, close to the Chitty residence - 42 Silversmith Street,
Kotahena. The Chittys resided here until circa 1910, when it became the
townhouse of Sir Solomon Bandaranaike.
It was in this world Christian
Chitty, a Colombo-based landed proprietor, lived and had his being. The family
used the surname Chetty in the Nineteenth Century, and Chitty at least from
1901 - as indicated in the Order Nisi, connected with the death of
eldest son James in January 1901. (Reproduced below). Many Colombo
Chetties placed the name Chetty after their family names in Dutch Zeylan as a
matter of course.

Matilda and Christian Chitty
Matilda Augusta Morel,
a.k.a. Mitzi, was a French Huguenot, daughter of M and Mlle JH
Morel. She and Christian were married at St. Thomas, Kotahena, the Colombo
Chetty Church, on 10 December 1860, a year-and-a-half after Abraham (elder
brother of Christian) wedded Henrietta Maria Morel (elder sister of Mitzi), on
21st. May 1859. Sadly, Henrietta died within the year. Abraham married her
cousin Elizabeth Quyn (Family
#1383).
Christian & Mitzi had
nine children: Marian, James Morel, Francis
Charles, Laura Sophie, Emily Maude, George
Edmund Snr., Charles Wilfred, Charles Cyril, and Rose
Beatrice. (See the Tree displayed below). Francis, whose second name
was Charles, died in childhood, likely soon after George Edmund was born. This
explains why two sons, who followed George Edmund, were named Charles.
Christian Chitty died circa 1891 and his
eldest son James Morel Chitty, an advocate, followed in 1901. George Edmund Chitty
Snr., an advocate himself, dealt with testamentary matters related to James. He
moved from 42 Silversmith Street, Kotahena, to houses on Ward Place, Cinnamon
Gardens (Gladeslyn and Deepdene) between 1906 and 1917.
This was while Stafford House, completed by the end of 1916, was
being built on his twelve-acre property that stretched from 105 Stafford Place
near Kynsey Road to 105 Norris Canal Road. The late President, J. R.
Jayewardene, & Mrs Elena Jayawardene, lived in Deepdene soon
after their marriage and before settling down at Braemar, Ward
Place. The Chitty’s also owned Courtview, in Chilaw, next door to the
Corea residence, Sigiriya.
George Edmund Snr. married Florence Mabel
Drusila Pullenayagam, of The Ark, James Street, Chilaw. They
brought up their four children George, Mabel, Rene, and Alexis, and the older
orphaned children of James and Laurie : Pearlie, Vivienne, and Lylie. Circa
when Mitzi died in 1917, the married children of Christan and Mitzi converged
around the Stafford House property to be close to their mother. Marian and David
Jansz lived at Reviela, and Rose and Dr EV Ratnam
at Annington, both houses in Regent Street (now E. W. Perera
Mawatha); the Tambimuttus stayed at Summer Cottage on de Saram
Road when in Colombo.
The family agency house, C. S. Chetty
& Co., was run, in the early 20th. C., by two sons of Christian -
George Edmund Snr. and Charles Cyril. Christian had real estate in Kotahena,
paddy lands in Orrs Hill, Trincomalee, and coconut estates in the Chilaw region.
His son, George Edmund Snr., owned plantations at Kusalai, Mandaline,
Rajakaduluwa, and Villatava. Landed gentry with interests in courts and commerce,
the Chittys were largely successful in avoiding the glare of publicity and
service on gubernatorial staffs during the colonial period.
Children of Christian and Mitzi married
into various communities. Marian married a Dutch Burgher. James Morel, George
Edmund Snr., and Charles Wilfred married Colombo Chetties. Laura Sophie, Emily
Maude, and Rose Beatrice married Tamils. Charles Cyril married a Kandyan
Sinhalese. Their descendants have taken partners of American, Danish, Chinese,
Colombo Chetty, English, French, German, Goan, Irish, Japanese, Kandyan
Sinhalese, Low Country Sinhalese, Moorish, Parsee, Polish, and Tamil, among
possible others.
