MUHAMMED KADER Meerasaibu (MKM) OF Medamahanuwara – Family # 416

Muhammed Kader Meersaibu a.k.a. MKM (d.1911) was a wealthy trader who frequently travelled to Sri Lanka from Kayalpatnam in South India. Majority of the Muslims in Kayalpatnam are the descendants of Arab traders from Egypt and Yemen who landed at the port of Korkai (the present Kayalpatnam) in the Pandyan Kingdom during the 12th Century. He married a lady from Uradeniya in Gunnepana and settled down in Medamahanuwara. Medamahanuwara is a village situated 37km east of Kandy along Kandy-Mahiyanganaya Road in the Kandy District. The family is popularly known as the MKM Family in the Kandy District.

He was blessed with six sons and two daughters namely MKM Mohideen, MKM Sayyed Ahamed, MKM Abuthalib (1895-1983), Zulaiha Meerasaibu, Kadeeja Meerasaibu, MKM Muthalib (1901-1974), MKM Aliyar (1903-1978) and MKM Hassan (1905-1972). MKM Family was a leading Businesses Family in Kandy specially between 1930’s to 1980’s. They were engaged in Estate Supplies, Plantation, Real Estate, Trading (Textile, Motor Spare Parts and Motor Vehicles) and Transport Service (both Passenger and Goods). Even to date the MKM Family own Plantations, continues Trading (Textile and Motor Spare Parts) and Transport Service (Passenger transport was restarted in 1980s). MKM Muthalib (1901-1974), MKM Aliyar (1903-1978) and MKM Hassan (1905-1972) were major shareholders of Silverline Bus Company Ltd which was nationalised in 1958. Furthermore, MKM Family lost around 30 houses when the Sri Lankan Government enacted the Ceiling on Housing Property Law in 1973.

His grandson-in-Law, OMC Hameed (d.1981) of Welimada was the only Muslim to be the Chairman of the Village Council of Uva Paranagama. His grandson, Major General Gibbrey Muthalib USP was promoted to the rank of Major General on 24th February 1999. When he was Lieutenant, he was seriously wounded and suffered head injuries in the insurgents attack at Wellawaya in 1971. He was the “Colonel of the Regiment” of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army from 01st December 1993 to 16th February 2002. Another grandson MA Caesar Reyan Hassan (1947-2015) of Sufiya Villa Banagala Eastate Nawayalatenna Katugastota obtained the highest number of preferential votes for the Pathadumbara Electorate during the local government elections held in 1991 and thereby became the first Muslim to be the Vice Chairman of the Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabava. He was deprived of the post of Chairman as the then United National Party Prime Minister D. B. Wijetunga wanted to appoint a Kandyan Buddhist belonging to the Govigama Caste for the Post of Chairman since Pathadumbara is a predominate Buddhists Electorate. Hence the person who got the third highest preferential votes from the party was appointed as the Chairman. (The person who got the second highest preferential votes from the party was a Kandyan Buddhist but not from the Govigama Caste). He was the first baby to be born through Caesarean at the Kandy General Hospital and was hence named Caesar Reyan. His granddaughter Hajara Muthalib Salie of Galle got elected to the Galle Municipal Council in 1991 and was the first Female Muslim to be elected to a Municipal Council in Sri Lanka.

His Great-grandson Azmi Marikar of Kandy was a member of the Kandy Municipal Council. His Great-granddaughter Farzana Yusuf Jameel PC of Colombo 05 is a former Additional Solicitor General of the Attorney General's Department of Sri Lanka and the first Sri Lankan female Muslim to be sworn in as President's Counsel. Another Great-granddaughter, Kareema Marikar of Harrow, United Kingdom was the Mayor of Harrow from 2018 to 2019. She thereby became the first female Muslim to be appointed as the Mayor of Harrow. Another Great-grandson Mufthy Muneer Ali (1984) represented Trinity College Kandy in both Cricket and Rugby Football and was awarded colours in 2003 for both Cricket and Rugby Football.  He was the Head Prefect of Trinity College Kandy and was awarded the Ryde Gold medal (a medal awarded to the best all-round student) in 2003.
