Surname: Delgado Email: Coahuila_Obits@yahoo.com Persons Name: Tony Delgado Birthdate: 1926 Birth Place: Coahuila, Mexico Source: The Sacramento Bee, September 06, 1996 Obituary: Tony Delgado lived a quiet life as a chef at various Sacramento hotels, but that quiet life touched many. The native of Mexico, who moved to Sacramento when he was 5, was father of nine, foster father to 37, an always ready volunteer and a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He died Sunday after a long, excruciating battle with cancer, said his wife, Charlotte. He was 70. When he returned to the United States after being shot down over Korea and being held as a prisoner of war, he accompanied the bodies of soldiers and played taps at their funerals. What he really wanted, said his wife, was to become a U.S. citizen and to have a military funeral. Delgado was awarded citizenship automatically upon his discharge from the Navy 50 years ago. On Monday, he'll get his final wish -- a burial in Sacramento County Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors. Born in the Mexican state of Coahuila, the eldest of nine children, he immigrated to the United States in 1931. His father, who fought in the Mexican Revolution with leader Emiliano Zapata and is memorialized in a park near the Delgado home, labored in the Southern Pacific rail yards a few blocks north of their home.Anxious to "earn" his U.S. citizenship, the younger Delgado lied about his age and enlisted in the Navy as a 16-year-old, Charlotte Delgado said. On Oct. 25, 1944, in the Battle of Samar off the Philippines, Delgado manned one of the guns aboard the USS Gambier Bay. Crippled by the loss of one engine and overwhelmed by Japanese warships, Delgado's ship went down, the only U.S. carrier sunk by naval gunfire in World War II. "All hands presumed lost at sea," the telegram to his mother read. But Marines plucked Delgado and 700 other survivors from the ocean three days later. No sooner was he honorably discharged from the Navy than he enlisted in the Army for duty in post-War Germany. Trained as a paratrooper, Delgado typically volunteered to be the first out the door. Others would not jump until they saw that he -- the "wind dummy" -- had landed safely, his family said. Shot down over North Korea, Delgado broke every bone in his feet on landing. He was imprisoned, untreated and crippled until the war's end.Upon returning to the states, he was assigned the unenviable job of escorting soldiers' bodies to their hometowns and later chasing down deserters. Delgado suffered many tragedies of his own at home. His first son died at 17 in an accident at a farewell party the night before he was to be shipped out to the Army. His second wife, an Austrian, and their twin sons died in a bombing of a train they were taking from Germany. Later, two other sets of infant twin sons died of illness. In Sacramento, he and his wife of 28 years became unofficial foster parents for many children sent their way by Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Sacramento. In addition to his wife Charlotte, Delgado is survived by twin sons, Tony Jr. and Jimmie Delgado, both of Modesto; five stepchildren -- Patrick and Delbert Williams, both of Sacramento, David Chapman of Sacramento, and Stephen and Tony Chapman, both of Redding; sisters, Mary Barton of Roseville and Angie Tamantini of Sacramento; brothers, Stephen of Marysville, John of Clearlake and Raymond of Orangevale; and numerous grandchildren.
