At the age of nine Joh Bjelke-Petersen suffered polio, which left him with a limp.

He won the Country Party seat of Nanango in 1947, aged 36.

Sir Joh married Florence Gilmour in 1957.  Lady Bjelke-Petersen was a
Queensland senator for 12 years, and later famed for her pumpkin scones.
