New South Wales is Australia's most populous state.  It is located  south-east of the country, north of Victoria and south of Queensland.  Founded in 1788, it originally comprised much of the Australian mainland including the Islands Lord Howe and Norfolk.  During the 19th century large areas were successively separated to form the British colonies of Tasmania (1825) South Australia (1836), Victoria (1855) and Queensland (1859). In 1901 these colonies, along with Western Australia, federated as the Commonwealth of Australia.  Sydney is the capital of New South Wales.  It is Australia's oldest and largest city; at least two-thirds of the New South Welsh population reside there.

NSWGenWeb is part of the WorldGenWeb Project; a non-profit, volunteer based organisation dedicated to providing global genealogical and historical records and resources.  Each region is represented by a number of independently run, supplementary homepages dedicated to particular countries, states, counties and associated localities.  The NSWGenWeb Project provides a list of genealogical resources that pertain to the Australian State of New South Wales.  It is an ancillary of the AustraliaGenWeb Project, which in turn is a part of the PacificGenWeb Project

Hi!  My name is Erica and I am the NSWGenWeb State Coordinator.  A State Coordinator (SC) is responsible for creating and maintaining the state or provincial level project website. Duties include the recruitment of county or shire volunteers and the administration of the message board.  In addition to the above, the state or provincial coordinator tries to establish working relationships with other state or provincial websites (archives, research, universities, etcetera ...) and often coordinates transcription projects to benefit researchers in that state.  An SC is appointed by the Country Coordinator (CC) or, if applicable, the Regional Coordinator (RC).

Volunteers are currently needed for the various regions within the State of New South Wales.  If you are interested in becoming a local coordinator please submit an expression of interest - we welcome the support!  Those wishing to contribute through the recording of cemetery transcriptions; or providing a free look-up service may post their offers of assistance directly to the NSWGenWeb Message Board
