De Alvis - Family #3168

1.      Joan Alvis Wijewardene Seneviratne  Maha Mudaliyar of the Gate  d.1766

(NOTE: names like Siriwardene Jayatilleke Seneviratne Gunesekere, Goonetilleke, Abeyewickreme, Bandaranaike, were given by the Dutch and Portuguese when promoted to certain positions. Many people from many families received such names).   P.5

1.      Cornelis de Alvis promoted from Mohabdiram of the Atapattu to Mudaliyar of Hewagam Korale in 1791  p.7

(NOTE: This De Alvis family most likely Burger……Portuguese married to Sinhalese.  Not sure if there are De Alvis Sinhalese families.     Re. the name De Alwis:  some families are Sinhalese families that were given this name during baptism,  other De Alwis are Burgers……ie. Portuguese and Dutch Soldiers etc. that married Sinhalese.  Robert Knox book says that about 1,000 European prisoners married Sinhalese. Temporal and Spiritual Conquest and other books mention soldiers marrying Sinhalese in order to build a Colony…..to have better success in taking control of Ceylon.)
