 After his retirement he became an oil merchant and had a chekku mill, and was

knownin consequence as 'Vanniya Stewart'   He married a native of the Island.  His  

daughter Sophia, born 1824, married at Colombo, Jan 11 1847, John william Marshall

of the Colombo Customs, and brother of HenrythomasMarshall, of the  P and O Galle

He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd Ceylon, Aug 3 , 1811

He was Assistant Commissionary-General at Ruwanwella in 1817-1818 ..  Like his

brother , he married a native. His eldest son became queens advocate.. His son ,

Charles Henry, became Senior Puisine Justice, was made a  C M G , and in June

1878, was offered, but declined, the Chief Justiceship of the Straits Settlements...  

One daughter Louisa , married George Alexander Mackenzie, another, Catherine

Lydia, married  C R curgenven,  C C S, and a third married Christoffelsz de Saram  

(1845  -  1870)

The prominent Colombo firm of private attorneys and, estate, commission, and banking agents, George Steuart & Company, whose offices are located at No 14, Queen Street, Fort, Colombo 1, Ceylon, was founded in 1844 by George Steuart. The business is carried on at the present time by Messrs William, Anderson, Thomas S Grigson, John Paterson, C M Gordon, and L T Villiers.
