Baptised on 5 Nov 1876 at Weslyan Chapel, Galle Circuit. Cert Ref:1876 / 206

His mothers name shown as: Eliza Henrietta Davidson on baptismal transcription.

It is thought he came to the UK to learn civil engineering prob c1894 as we have traced a Mr & Mrs Davidson who sailed from Southampton to Colombo 9 Nov 1896. Ferguson's Ceylon Directory 1903/4 has 'CMD Davidson, Survey Department, Hanwella'. During this time (1894-1904) his father died in Ceylon and not wishing to become a tea planter, Cecil returned to the UK, to Chorlton, Manchester abt 1904 where he met and married Sarah Doyle in 1905. Their first son, Walter, was born at Chorlton, South Manchester.

In 1906 he became assistant Engineer on the Metropolitan District Railway. In 1907/8 he sailed from Southampton to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to work on the Buenos Aires & Rosario railway, leaving Sarah in Fulham, as she was expecting Noel.  1908-1912 Cecil was engineer on construction of Rio de Janeiro harbour and a transporter bridge and a dry dock. Sarah joined him in 1910, when Marjorie was born.

1913-1914, Engineer & Agent on construction of offices at the Port of Para.

During WW1 he was on a temporary commission with the Royal Engineers and the Royal Corps of Transport in France, where he was promoted Major. He was demobbed in 1919 and awarded the British & Victory medals.

He was working for Tilbury Contracting & Dredging Co Ltd at Inverkeithing in 1920 and living at 22 Thornton Hill, Wimbledon in 1921, whilst working on the embankment, road bridges and sewers at Chiswick and other projects. From 1926-8 he was Chief Engineer for a Belgian Company designing concrete wharves in the Belgian Congo.  1929-1932 Engineer constructing roads and public works in Portugal, and other projects including Singapore harbour, which was completed 1938. He had become a specialist in re-inforced concrete.

He may have worked for Rendell, Palmer and Triton, about this time, and Patrick D-D says he was Sir Wolfe Barry's protege.

In 1936 he wrote to War Office to apply for service in newly re-organised Army. Soon, he was responsible for building of Glascoed underground armaments factory in record time. See Patrick DD's written account.

Notes for SARAH CATHERINE DOYLE:

Source: Birth and Marriage certificates, 1901 UK Census and Michael D-D.

Sarah was considered a musical child prodigy and she studied at the Manchester College of Music.  In about 1916, after losing her 5th child at only 4 years of age, she went to London and took part in concert parties, during WW1. She became a successful light music arranger who worked for Noel Coward, CB Cochran, Cole Porter, Douglas Byng, ENSA and others as Elsie April. She helped Noel Coward with 'Cavalcade' and 'Bitter Sweet' which is dedicated to her. Two items she composed were: "The Village Green" and "Here lies a vagabond".

Sarah was a Roman Catholic and thus could never agree to a Divorce.

Avril Jacob, her grand-daughter, believes her family originated in Waterford, Ireland.

On Douglas Noel's birth certificate she is shown as 'Sarah Kathleen'.

She met John Luxton the singer, and had a relationship and a son Peter. Peter tragically died at age 24 of lukemia. This devastated Sarah, who never played music again and she died of early senility.

From 'My Life with Noel Coward' by Graham Payn & Barry Day, pub Applause & 'A Talent to Amuse' by Sheridan Morley, pub Hienemann.

'London Calling' saw the beggining of an alliance between Noel and Elsie April, who was a small sharp eyed woman,  who wore remarkable hats. She joined CB Cochran's staff as chorus mistress and was involved with all of Noel's musical work between 1923 and 1939. She transcribed and arranged all his songs and was a major influence on the harmonies of Noel's compositions. Noel had the melodies and Elsie notated them onto paper with the swiftness of an expert shorthand stenographer. Her mastery of musical technique was miraculous.
