 ODELL – Family #1173

Joseph Odell.

Born 29 May 1847 in Flitton, Bedfordshire.

Joined the 16th Regiment of Foot (Bedfordshire Regiment) 19th July 1865.

(Assumption. In the 1851and 1861 Census he would have appeared living in Flitton with his parents, Thomas and Susannah Odell)

May 1866 to February 1870 posted with the regiment to Canada.

From the return to Canada the regiment (as well as Joseph) was posted to Ireland where he served in the Curraigh, Newry, and Dublin.

By October 1871 he was in Jersey (Assumption. He could be on either the census records for Ireland or Jersey)

From 1871 it seems he had various British Isle postings until he arrived in Plymouth and married there 10 June 1875 to Rebecca Gruitt.

From 31January 1876 to 8 August 1876 he was imprisoned for being Absent without Leave!

From August 1876 to March 1883 he was in Ireland again, Starting in Buttevant then going to Athlone, Cork, Newry and Belfast. (Assumption. He would appear on the 1881 census in Ireland with his wife and 3 children, most likely in Athlone but maybe Belfast)

March 1883 he was transferred to the 1st Royal Jersey Militia where remained until he left the Army in January 1897.

From records obtained so far I would place him as follows: -

1851 Census…. Flitton, Bedfordshire.

1861 Census…. Flitton, Bedfordshire.

1871 Census…. Jersey.

1881 Census…. Ireland

1891 Census…. Jersey (confirmed as I have a copy of the relevant page.)

1901 Census…. Jersey

1911 Census…. Jersey

He died in October 1917.

He and Rebecca had 10 children in total as follows: -

Joseph Henry Odell

Born 5 October 1877, Buttevant Ireland. Lived all his life in Jersey. Never married. Worked for the Railway then the bus company. Died 8 August 1948.

Alice Elen Odell

Born in 1879 most likely in Athlone. Married a London Docker and is reported to have died in the East End of London about 1966.

Annie Odell

Born 2 July 1881, Newry, Co Down,  Ireland. Married Charles Le Maistre. Had 2 Children, Charles who died in 1969 and Violet who is still surviving aged 84.

Died 9 April 1945, most likely due the effects of the Occupation of the Channel Islands.

Violet Odell

Born 31 March 1883, St. Peter, Jersey. Died 1 February 1908 as a result of a bad inoculation.

Charles William Odell

Born 7 August 1884, St. Peter, Jersey. Appears on the 1891 census, almost nothing known only rumor and supposition from then on. Thought to have joined the Army (assuming he was 15 when he joined as his brother Alfred was and he went into the Royal Garrison Artillery he would have joined about 1898 to 1899) and died in Ceylon between 1922 and 1925.

Alfred Thomas Odell

Born 8 August 1885 St. Peter, Jersey. Joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, June 1900. Served until 25 June 1912. Went to Canada, joining the Canadian Army, August 1912 and served and survived the First World War. Left the Army in 1919 and died in Halifax, Nova Scotia about 1955. Married but had no children but ‘adopted’ one of my Grandfathers Sons from his first marriage.

Ellen Rebecca Odell

Born 26 October 1888 St. Peter, Jersey. Married Walter Dingle and ran a Tobacconist’s Shop in St. Helier, Jersey. Remained in Jersey during the Occupation. No children, died 19 November 1975.

George Wilfred Odell

Born 30 April 1889, St. Aubin, Jersey. Joined the Royal Garrison Artillery (assuming he was about 15 when he joined, as his brother Alfred was this age) about 1901 to 1902. Served during First World War. Commissioned in 1918 and transferred to The Royal Signals he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel before leaving the Army in 1944. Died in Bournmouth about 1978.

William Stanley Odell

Born 22 May 1890, St. Aubin, Jersey. My Grandfather. Joined the East Surries (reportedly and if age 15 when he went in this would be about 1904/1905 and the regiment was in Jersey then. His uniform is different in a photo I have of him and his brothers dated about 1908). Transferred to the Royal Garrison Artillery certainly for the First World War. Served in Europe and the Middle East. Left the Army early 1930’s and worked at the Gunnery School at Shoeburyness. Had 6 children in all, 3 each from his 2 wives. First wife committed suicide in November 1922. Died 29 March 1959 at 17. Ness Road, Shoeburyness.

John Odell

Born 4 December 1891 St. Aubin, Jersey. Died 17 August 1882 of Whooping Cough.
