Correspondence (E-Mail) received from Bernard White and Anne Winter Williams re the data above and its links to the WHITE Family for reviewand comments and updates, if any:-

Thank you so much all of you.
First  Fazli Sameer (I don't know how I should address you),
Thank you for making these connections for me.
I am so grateful that you are helping me as I begin this journey.  I have responded directly to Anne in the following.  I hope that others will read on and see if any thing rings a bell.

Greetings Anne (?),
I'm not sure how to address you.
I am so grateful that you took the time to email me.  This is a very exciting beginning indeed.
Here's some more information.

My family is also decended from the White family in Colombo Ceylon, but obviously a different White family. Colonel Abraham White B 1787 d 1818 m Elisabeth Van Driberg b 1790 Colombo Ceylon. They had seven children Susannah, Charlotte,James, George, Abraham, William and Charles.Does anyone know how to find out any more information on this family?

Unfortunately I don't know much of anything past John Bernard White and Cecilia Hawke.

Their parents were John Bernard White and Cecilia White nee Hawke.  John Bernard had a sister named Alice and two brothers one of them named Henry.

John Bernard and Cecilia were married in a catholic church in Matale in 1914. Our family home in Kandy, which my father inherited from his father was called Torrington Cottage. The boys went to Trinity College in Kandy.  My father finished up his school days at St. Joseph's.
Cecilia died on January 14, 1931 in Kandy from some soil poisoning (some bacteria). Duncan went on to win the silver medal in the 1948 olympics. Rumour has it that Cecilia was of a mixed Tamil background.

John Bernard was an apothecary.  He would dispense medicines to the local people.

My father Stanley married Eleanor Wickramasakera on December 28, 1940 in St. Philip Neri's Catholic Church in Colombo.
My mother Eleanor went to Kandy Convent School.  My father also had a cousin named Doris who went to the same school.  My father also has a cousin named Vicky White who is one of the sons of Henry White (John Bernard's brother).  Vicky still lives in Kandy.
My mother's mother was Maude Wickramasakera nee Robinson.  She was married to another Henry.  My mother's siblings are Anton, Tiny, Ian, Henry, Rose and Audrey (who died at an early age). My father has written a biography published by Carlton Press.  It is full of clues.  Perhaps you would know someone who is interested in it.  I have copies to send out.

I am seeing my father tonight (July 2003).  He is still alive and living in Anaheim, California.  I will share your email with him to see if he recognized anything.  Stanley is the oldest living White from our family line.  As you might know Duncan, his younger brother passed away about 4 years ago now in Warwickshire, England.  His widow Angela and their children live on.

My father has been experiencing increasing health problems.  He is 87 years old but still completley with all his senses in tact.
I know that the name Rita rings a bell.  I will ask him tonight.

Thank you again for your kindness in responding.

I am brand new to this genealogy game and can use all the help I can get.

I am also growingly interested in the history of Ceylon/Sri Lanka.  Especially from the "Burgher" perspective.  The British officers who fathered children with native women. (which is my story, I believe.)

Thank you again.

Dear Bernard,

I was in a convent in Ceylon with a White family of girl twins, Shirley and Marie and their older sister, Rita. They also had a brother. We were told we were related to them but cannot find out how?

Duncan White was their cousin so they must be your cousins too. Shirley told me that their grandfather was a medical officer around the Kandy area and that  the family had lost much property at one time.

I know Gammaduwa very well if it is the place you refer to because my father once managed an estate near to it known as Opalgalla near Matale. My uncle Willie actually managed an estate and lived in Gammaduwa belonging to my Aunt's husband's family.   His own wife's family owned one in Rattota close by.I believe Shirley's grandpa was of mixed race and she said her ancestor had come from
London. Our own White ancestor was Anthony Samuel White, whose daughter was Evelyn Maria. While looking for other ancestors around the Bethnall Green area near Spitalfields, I found a person of that name whose parents had been silk weavers just like some of ours. The date of this Anthony Samuel White's baptism seemed to be about the time ours would have been.I found a family of Whites
in the book 'Tombstones and Monuments' and will send you info. from it which maybe on our own family website. It re: a family of Whites descended from a Dr Abraham White who was a Doctor, who left a large family when he died, some of whom where taken care of by the Governor's family I think. I will look it all up and send to you because they have the name John among them. Have you heard
of this family??

Hi Bernard

What a surprise getting this email from you relayed through Fazli. I know your family in Kandy very well. Maybe you remember that next door to old Dr Whites house in Udawattakele lived a schoolmaster from Trinity by the name of Ivan Jansze. He was my uncle and I visited them very often, and knew old Dr White very well. I also met your family at parties etc. I remember Dawn and Errol - but you must have qualified as one of the brats at that stage! - and then your family left for Canada. Also you used to live near Kingswood College in Kandy, and my parents stayed about a mile away at Getembe. I am Vernon Jansze's son.

I do genealogy as a hobby, and have been doing so for donkeys years. I have quite a bit on the Whites of whom quite a few remain. However I trade info for info - so be prepared for umpteen questions - and so will I.

First what happened to all your sisters and brother - Dawn, Errol, Ingrid, Mari, Ramona & Ivy - and perhaps even more? All I know is that Errol m Sherry in USA and had 2 children. Could you please update me on these families and your own too.

Second your fathers brothers - Duncan, Douglas & Freddie. Douglas m (a) Norah Eunice de Joodt, (b) Glory Solomon and had a daughter by each mariage. Duncan m Angela Siebel and died fairly recently leaving 5 children whose names I do not know. Freddie m Lavender Brohier and had a son and a daughter. Any info on these families is welcome.

Next - your grandmother Maud Robinson who died in 1997 - do you know anything at all about her family? Any scraps would help.
For the moment that is all the questions. (It is a great pity that I did not ask questions from old Dr White - but I was very shy about genealogy at that stage.

John Bernard White medical practitioner b.1882 d.18.7.1965 m Mary Cecilia Hawke. He was the son of Charles Leonard White, tea planter at Gampola & Bandara Menike who had 2 other sons and a daughter as far as I know so far. They were Henry George White b.1885 m Emily Hawke and had 7 children, Edward James b.1896 m (a) Alexandra Reid and had 5 children (b) ...... and had 2 more. Desmond White of Kotte is the eldest son and is still around. JB also had a sister Alice Gertrude b.1895 who married Don Joseph Gregory Ranasinghe.

So far we have not been able to come across Charles Leonards parents. although there are several White families living in Ceylon -
specially Kandy district- before him.

Hoping this would help you - and nice to hear news of your family.

Regards

Notes from Anne Winter Williams in UK:-

Quote:

All this comes from the Sri Lanka website and ours. Malcolm Jansze emailed and seems to include the family of our school mates, Shirley & Marie Whites ancestors with those of the Dr. I gave him the information Christine gave me of the 7 kids of the Dr (Abraham White) and put him right as our 3 family’s have not been connected yet. I have a suspicion that they are because our James Winter was also married at St. Marys Lambeth and both Christine and the Bethnall Green Whites have exact similar names and born a year apart!(George William White was brother of A.S of Bethnall Green and is also a son of Dr White. If our 3 families were all together on the Genealogy Website matters can be seen more clearly. At least we ought to put the Abe White info from Tombstones so folk can see our A.S is not a son of his as is put about.

Dr Abraham White married Theodora Eliz. VON Driberg not VAN.This ladies' family descended from Friedrich Wilhelm von Driberg who was Commandant of Mullaitivu and died in 1807. He was probably a son of Diederich Carolus von Driberg who was Capt.Lt in the VOC and died in 1804.Capt Charles Driberg signed his name as 'Driberg' in a wedding register and later as 'Drieberg' the von was dropped early.

This family was not in anyway connected to the family descended from Johannes Gerardus Drieberg who in 1878 married Johanna Horn apparently. My 'suspected ancestor, Anthony Sam.White is recorded in the register of St Matthews Bethnall Green which I have viewed on microfiche whereas the 7 children of Dr Abraham White must have been recorded in Ceylon where he married. Any info. will be gratefully received especially baptismal dates of the Doctor's children in Jaffna etc.
