The name Van Der Poorten derives from the Flemish phrase for "from the Port".

1  Antoine Joseph van der Poorten + Ranmenike

Description: Description: vanderpoorten.jpg

Antoine Joseph, was a Fleming from Brussels. His family was in the stained glass industry and may have been of Jewish origin. It is believed there was a Jewish branch of this family in Holland, which was wiped out, or almost wiped out, by the Nazis. It is also mentioned that the Germans wanted him to be a spy and that he had refused them. Antoine Joseph senior worked in the Belgian Congo and escaped a shipwreck with another person in a small boat - he was in fear his companion would turn cannibal. He had a very interesting diary but no one knows what happened to this.

Antoine had devout Roman Catholic parents who wanted him to join the priesthood. He refused and went to the Congo instead.

His common-law wife in Ceylon was a Sinhalese lady (probably Kandyan) named Ranmenike.
