I am not sure where it came from but I do know that Fredrik Andree who is my grandfather a few times over came from Prussia ( Germany) around 1750 ish. I know that there are french Andrees and there are also Scottish Andrees ......in Scotland the name Andree is a derivation of the name Andrew or Andrews.

Do you know if there was or is a Slave Island. My grandfather and his brother The Andree brothers namely A. W.Lorenz Andree and Albert Percival (known as Bertie) Andree had studios there. The Andree family(3 generations of) also had studios in Galle, Colombo, and Matara

Thomas Hogg junior has memorial at Galle face Burial Ground. He died Dec.24,1835 aged 25 yrs. 7 months and 15 days.and was born on 9.5.1810. He had brother George John Hogg born 25th oct,1817 and died 6.4.1838 aged 21 yrs.5months and 14 days. The tablet to their memory was placed by the widow Catherine Hogg of Lt. Thos. Hogg of H.M Ceylon Regiment,1839. Thos. Hogg senior, was a Sgt. in 3rd Ceylon Regt in 1809 etc and married Catherine Burr a widow.

Thomas Hogg, junior in the Gazette informs the public that he will on 16th jan.,1832 establish at his premises, 9, Chatham St. 'A concern for the disposal of Merchandize on Commission"His sister Elizabeth married at St. Paul's Colombo on November 14,1831 Nathaniel Austin junior, son of Nathaniel Austin, who was Quarter master, 3rd Ceylon Regt. and afterwards Deputy Asst. Comissary-General , Galle.

So the Austin/Austen descendants were kin to those of H.P.J Layard of Nineveh fame as 'Mary Jane' has pointed out on the website she mentions.Wonder what goes on at No.9 Chatham St. now?

1  Adolphus Wilhelmus Andree + Lucilla Charlotta Henrietta Lorenz

2  Clara Elizabeth Andree + George William Austin, s/o Nathaniel Austin and Sophia Frederica Wilhelmina Calesky., bro of Nathaniel Adrian

    2  A. W.Lorenz Andree

2  Albert Percival Andree (Bertie) + Martha Mary Oertel

        3  Primrose Hester (Martha) Andree

Anne...re Chatham Street.....there are two apparently........one is Lower and one is Upper Chatham Street in Colombo. I did a search online but no 9 hasn't appeared as yet but as far as I can see Chatham Steet is very business orientated so I expect there is some sort of business running from no 9 too.........I wonder if anyone here lives in Colombo who can come back and tell us ?? It would definatley be interesting to know what happens at number 9 now.

I have to say that the Austin family you speak of are related to the Andree's tooo..........we have in this forum a lady called Sandy Austin who has more details of the Austin family than I have and I am sure she would be wiling to help with connections.

Anne , you seem to be very much in the know re Sri Lankan places. Do you know if there was or is a Slave Island. My grandfather and his brother The Andree brothers namely A. W.Lorenz Andree and Albert Percival (known as Bertie) Andree had studios there. The Andree family(3 generations of) also had studios in Galle, Colombo, and Matara. I hope to go there one day soon to see where they once lived and worked. My mother was born in Colombo and I would dearly love to see where she was born and lived as a girl before her family moved on to Bombay in India. A little bit of info beforehand would help me lots. :)

Thank you so much .....MaryJane.

Is the name Andree also French Huguenot? I well remember my Mum saying she was going to Chatham St. but have forgotten where all these streets in the Fort, Colombo are now.I think one turned left at the clocktower?

The dept. stores were, Miller's, Apothecaries, Cargill's and I think Whiteway & Laidlaw, all full of goodies at X'mas.I have tried to get a map of Colombo with no success and must try again. There really was a place called Slave island near the Beira lake. You should find more about it on the S.L GenWeb somewhere. It was said to be where the Dutch kept their slaves. Bishop's college where Sandy Austin, Mike Ondaatje and his sisters and my own sister and cousins went to, was not far from that area.//I have contacted Sandy who is a cousin of my good friend and good friend of my cousin!

A poser of a question there Anne...... Oh aren't names so confusing ?? I have just recieved a mail from a "kind of" cousin in Sri lanka who mentions many names who are related to us and I see that the well known Sri Lankan entertainer the late Donovan Andree was a cousin of mine too.I have read about him but not really knowing if he was related or not .Life does get very interesting as time passes doesn't it ?lol

Wow what a small world it is ,you knowing Sandy Austin too. I hope she is well as I have not heard from her for some time as I gather she was not feeling so good a while back. We were trying to piece together her Austin family link with my Andree family which I have done now. When you mail her next then tell her I shall send her my info as soon as I can.

BTW Anne where do live . I am in Suffolk in the UK.
(MJ >>>reminds self to check up on more about the Andree name )

Hello Mary Jane and Anne
I must apologise . . . I have indeed been 'out of the loop' as far as keeping up with listings. I am very interested in finding out more on the Hogg, Burr families. Thomas Hogg was my third-great-grandfather whose daughter Elizabeth married Nathaniel Adrian Austin. You can see the Austin tree in the Sri Lanka listings, and I will be very happy to supply you with any information you would like from my database on Sri Lankan families. I left Ceylon - as it was known then - in 1961, and worked in (upper) Chatham Street.

Clara Elizabeth Andree, daughter of Adolphus Wilhelmus Andree and Lucilla Charlotta Henrietta Lorenz, married Nathaniel Adrian's brother - George William Austin, sons of Nathaniel Austin and Sophia Frederica Wilhelmina Calesky.

I live in Auckland, NZ - and slightly out on a limb for direct researching - but my fascination for genealogy and gathering 'new' relations has not diminished, so please keep in touch.

Sandy Austin

Hello Mary Jane and Anne
I have indeed been 'out of the loop' as far as keeping in touch with listings - my apologies. I also want to assure anyone who is even remotely interested that I am fit and well . . . lol. I have often wondered about the Hogg, Burr, Garvin and other families who married into the Austin family. William Austin (m. Eliza Garvin, daughter of Thomas Garvin - of Ireland - and Maria Abigail Palm) and Nathaniel Adrian Austin were sons of Nathaniel Austin and Sophia Frederica Wilhelmina Calesky. Nathaniel Adrian married Elizabeth Hogg, daughter of Thomas Hogg and Catharine Burr and is my direct ancestor. William's son George William Austin m. Clara Elizabeth Andree, daughter of Adolphus Wilhelmus Andree and Lucilla Charlotta Henrietta Lorenz. I have the trees . . . and would be very happy to pass on any information.

Adolphus Wilhelmus Andree and Lucilla Charlotta Henrietta Lorenz are my great great grandparents on my mother's side.
Adolphus William is the father of my granfather Albert Percival Andree Married Martha Mary Oertel who had several children including my mother Primrose Hester (Martha)Andree. Sandy just like you I love this Gen' thing and love to contact those whom we are related to as well as those we meet on the way. I hope you are feeling much better now too.I for one will keep in touch thank you.
MaryJane.
