Saint Michael's Maronite Catholic Church of Koubbeh, Tripoli, Lebanon

After being the parish of some 30,000 Maronites from Koubbeh and the various villages and towns in the area, the church suffered destruction, and desecration, during the civil war ot 1975.

At the end of hostilities of 1991, the church restoration started, and a surrounding concrete wall and steel gate were erected to preserve the sanctity of the church from lawlessness surrounding it. Please note that the area surrounding the church is currently inhabited by displaced people from other areas of Lebanon. The original inhabitants of the area have moved to safer areas where they can live and practice their faith in a more secure place. A small and powerless minority of the original habitation still resides in the area.

The buildings and properties are still registered in the names of the originals owners, and no land transfers are knows to have taken place.

In the summer of 1999, the Government of Lebanon acquired the destroyed properties near the church, and is re-building the area a la Solidaire, to the dis-contempt of all residents who were paid a very small percentage of the value of their properties. Many are contemplating appealing the Government action. However, the prospects of the area being re-built is a very welcome news.

Antoun Akkari, the agent of the property (Wakil elWakf) of St Michael Church, personally asking for donations to help build the Church Hall. He's very aggressive about it, and has collected, as of August 1999, some $ 30,000 US Dollars for the project. More is needed to build the church hall, so we are asking all benefactors worldwide, parishioners of St Michael, as well as other churches, anywhere in the world, to help us rebuild this beautiful church community which numbered over 30,000 people before the 1975-1991 civil war.
