In Arabic, Faddoul means " a person with virtues", or a "person who does a lot of favors". As per Ibrahim Farah from Koubbe (born circa 1920), the Faddouls had a "Khan" in Haret es-Saydeh in Tripoli called "Khan Faddoul". A Khan was a hotel made up of two floors, and a stable. Vendors and transporters from far places used to stay the night on the second floor, sell their merchandise on the first floor, and keep their donkeys, in the stable that is part of the Khan.

Ibrahim Michael Ibrahim farah's grandfather "Ibrahim", was such a transporter/vendor from Memneh, Akkar. He used to stay at Khan Faddoul when he came to Tripoli to sell his wares. He took a liking of Mariam's sister, married her, and took her, on the donkey back to live with him in Memneh, Akkar. She was known as Um Tannous (the mother of Tannous).

The young Ibrahim, was sent by his grandfather to study in Tripoli, where he stayed in the house of Khoury Hanna Dib, his father's maternal cousin. My father Maurice Khoury Hanna Dib was very close to his second cousin Ibrahim, who was a very neat and clean person, and later became the representative of the Singer Sewing Machines in Tripoli.

Back to the Faddoul's family. In August, 1999, I spent a couple days in the Maronite church of St Michael in Koubbeh going over marriage and baptismal records dating back to 1884. I also interviewed some Faddouls currently in Koubbeh.
