Es muy importante que Ud. conozca un poco de la historia de Panamá antes  de comenzar su investigación.  En el pasado la tierra que es hoy la República de Panamá estuvo bajo la jurisdición de España, Colombia, y--en el caso de La Zona del Canal--Los EE.UU.  De modo tal, que Ud. tiene que saber la historia política del período en que está interesado para saber quien tenía jurisdición.

It is very important that you understand a little of Panama's history before you start your research.  In the past, the land that is today the Republic of Panama was under the jurisdiction of Spain, Colombia, and--in the case of the Canal Zone--the United States.  So, you have to know the political history of the period in which you are interested to know who had jurisdiction.
